We have fought for eleven years to adopt and we have four NA children that we have adopted. It is not easy. Everyone says they need NA families like crazy but no one knows how to do it or choses not to. We have heard of hundreds, no I mean thousands of NA children in foster care but how do you adoptive parents get them?????????????????? It is a mystery to me. We have bugged and bugged SW to work with us until they get tired of us. Be your own best advocate. We have several sources that we could share with you. Just email and we will. rstewart@hiwaay.net

There are also newborn situations that pop up all the time looking for NA families. Check www.nurtureadopt.org , on the available situations. They come up every once in a while. They have been a bit on the high end, though. I would contact Debby Machuca at Chrysalis House in CA. There is a link to her site on Nurture Adopt, as well. Good luck! We need families like you! Pam

My husband and I are considering adoption, but we really want to adopt a Native American baby. After reading this, we're really scared we won't be able to. I read some statements about the Indian Child Welfare Act, and we're essentially white because we have no proof. My husband is about 1/4 Cree and I am 1/8 Choctaw, but we have no proof. Would it be helpful to prove our heritage? Would this make the adoption process easier? Thanks! M. and T.

Yes, The Indian Child Welfare Act was put in place so Native children could ideally end up with Native parent(s). Family of the child, enrolled Tribal members and then other enrolled Native Americans get 1st priority. I think that if no one with those requirements steps forward to adopt....then the Social Worker and the child's tribe can elect to have a non Native adopt.

He with the Sisseton tribe in S.D. and I in the Southern Cherokee. We already have birth children but have wanted to adopt to complete our family.We tried through Sissetons child protective services but because we live outside the Reservation we came last. We after 2yrs waiting moved on to the state. We were told that there was a big need for us. But this has not materialized and we are still waiting. Another year has passed and we will redo the paper work again and hope. If ther is any helpful information or maybe some contacts let us know

Once you have that in hand go to your state and find out what else they may need. If you want a child from your own nation contact them. Often they have children waiting for a home. I also suggest that you find a way to be known. In other worlds make sure you are a part of your community and nation. It never hurts to know the people who will make the decsions. That is not to say you use them or anything. However if you are a part of the community it will make it easier for you to be understood and known. It will also allow you a network to fall back on in the case of problems with the state. Michigan other mid west states have lots of native children waiting for homes. Just recently we have been working on getting 2 older boys placed with us. We had no luck finding a baby or toddler. I've found that it is very hard to get any information or contact from the caseworkers. We are very excited about the boys, but would be interested in ideas on what to do to get a young referral, in case our current situation doesn't work or when we decide to adopt again.

Is there any hope for me being able to adopt a Native American child? especially if I can't prove my heritage? Like most of you, I hear there are thousands of children available in the Midwestern states. How does one explain to a tribe that they feel "called" to adopt a NA child.....out of all the parent-less children in the world? I'm frustrated because I want to be a mother, but I don't know where to go from here. Is my desire hopeless and I should be looking elsewhere or what do I do next? We would love to adopt a NA infant or very young sibling group. We do not have children of our own yet, but are planning on that as well. We have always know we want to be adoptive parents as well...whichever comes first is fine with us. We have not done a homestudy yet, as we just moved to AZ within the last couple months, but would get right on it if the right child came available. We are young (28 and 31), healthy, active, and have a supportive family, who would give a child more love than they would ever need!
